Wisdom teeth are molars that usually come in when people are in their late teens or twenties. They are at the back of the mouth so they can sometimes cause significant problems like crowding other teeth, causing gum infections, or threatening overall oral health.
At Catawba Valley Dental, we have performed thousands of extractions since we opened our doors in 2001. We strive to educate our patients about the need for wisdom tooth extractions. Leaving impacted or crowded wisdom teeth in place can lead to significant dental issues in the future.
Most of our patients who have their wisdom teeth removed are young people between the ages of 17 and 25. We strive to educate our patients about when and why extractions are recommended.
With any tooth extraction, it is our priority to work safely and quickly to make the experience as gentle as possible for the patient. Our wisdom teeth removal procedure often uses medication to minimize stress and discomfort.
While we do everything we can to minimize the pain of wisdom teeth extraction, it is normal for patients to experience some residual soreness and swelling for a few days after the procedure. For most, an over-the-counter pain medication provides relief effectively. When medication is used in wisdom teeth removal, it is required that our patients have someone to drive them to and from their appointment. Our experienced staff give detailed instructions about what to do after wisdom teeth extraction and provide follow-up care as needed.
